Cosmelan and Dermamelan are chemical peels that safely and effectively treat all types of pigmentation, including even the most stubborn Melasma.
Our treatment involves a focused programme of pre-peel skin products, preparatory peel, a Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel and post-peel skin products.
The treatment aims to restore the skin to its natural condition, with an even skin tone, improved smoothness, and radiant health.
Dermamelan vs Cosmelan
- Cosmelan peel is generally used for new, superficial, and mild-to-moderate pigmentation.
- Dermamelan is a medical-grade peel for deep, stubborn, moderate-to-severe pigmentation.
Your choice should be based on how severe your pigmentation is, which our team can advise you on.
How does our Dermamelan or Cosmelan Peel treatment work?
An excessive accumulation of melanin causes brown spots on the skin.
Factors contributing to the occurrence of pigment spots are the skin ageing process resulting from excessive sunlight, hormones (pregnancy, contraceptives), and some medications.
The innovative treatment works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for pigmentation production, reducing the accumulation of melanin and exfoliating the skin to improve its overall appearance.

The Cosmelan and Dermamelan peels are always done as part of a focused programme. The programme involves several stages:
- Initial consultation with an experienced therapist who will take pictures of your skin, discuss your skin concerns and agree a treatment plan that will best address your needs.
- Home preparation kit: you will be given specific skincare products to use at home for 2-4 weeks. These products will prepare your skin for the next stage of treatment.
- Melanostop peel: this is a gentle treatment that works to temporarily ‘stop’ the activity of your melanocytes (pigment cells) in preparation for the deeper peel.
- Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel: 2-5 days after your Melanostop peel, you will return to have your Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel applied. These peels are in the form of a thick mask that stays on the skin for 8-12 hours (depending on your skin type) and then washed off at home.
- Home aftercare kit: After your deep peels, our team will review you to ensure that you skin is healing optimally. You will then be given an aftercare kit to use at home which will ensure that you achieve the best results from your treatment and that your results are maintained long-term.
Most people will see an improvement in their pigmentation approximately 1 month after a Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel. However, it is important to bear in mind that pigmentation can be present within several layers of the skin, and so removing 1 layer may reveal deeper pigmentation underneath.
This is something that we will discuss with you prior to treatment and we will use our skin scanning technology to highlight where your pigmentation is residing within the skin – so there are no surprises!
As part of the Cosmelan and Dermelan programmes, it is vital that you continue to use your home care products as prescribed as this will ensure that your pigmentation continues to fade and prevent recurrence.
In some special cases, your practitioner may suggest additional treatment to ensure you achieve optimal results. You will be advised by your practitioner who will work closely with you and recommend the required number of treatments to meet your expectations
Patch-testing is not generally required. If you have specific allergies or skin concerns, it is important to discuss these with the practitioner at your first consultation.
For optimal results, most patients will require 1 peel followed by an ‘at-home’ skin maintenance programme for 12 months.
The results of this treatment are long-term. However, if concerns such as pigmentation return (e.g. due to factors such as sun exposure, pregnancy or medication), you may benefit from doing the programme again in the future.
The treatment is not painful. Most people will feel mild or moderate heat and stinging during the treatment. After treatment, the skin feels sensitive for several days after treatment.
There is some redness, swelling, sensitivity and peeling of the skin. Peeling usually starts 2 days after the treatment and continues for a total of 7 days. Most people can continue with normal work activities after 3 days of peeling and normal social activities after 7 days.
The Cosmelan and Dermamelan treatments are carried out by our experienced therapists and doctors.
After your initial consultation, you will be provided with a home skincare kit which will prepare your skin for your in-clinic peels. During the treatment programme, we recommend that you pause any other products like retinol, tretinoin, salicylic acid or glycolic. We recommend that you do not tan for at least 4 weeks prior to and for at least 6 weeks after this treatment.
