What are the causes of under-eye bags, dark circles and excess skin?

Under-eye bags and dark circles are some of the most common skin concerns that most of us face today.

The delicate skin in the under-eye area is one of the first places that starts to show signs of wear and tear. One of the biggest reasons for this is ageing. As we get older, the fat pads under our eyes start to break down, which causes skin to become more fragile. This is why we start to see eye bags form, on top of lines and wrinkles.

Fat loss around the eye area can also lead to sunken eyes, which can create dark circles or shadows under the eyes. For some fluid retention can also be an issue, which results in puffy eyes.

While fat loss and collagen loss in the skin play a big part in under-eye bags appearing, other factors can lead to tired-looking eyes.

Other factors that might cause eye bags and dark circles

  •       A lack of sleep – reduces oxygen under the eyes and can make blood vessels more visible.
  •       Poor nutrition – fatty foods and salt can lead to swelling under the eyes, while not drinking enough water can cause the skin to become dehydrated and the orbital bone to become more visible.
  •       Allergies – any type of allergy, including nasal congestion can result in puffiness under the eyes and eye bags forming. It can also lead to the blood vessels under the eyes dilating which causes dark circles.
  •       Genetics – if you have a family history of under-eye bags or dark circles, you are more likely to develop them too. People of colour also tend to suffer from dark eye bags due to excess melanin in their skin.

The best eye bag removal treatments in London

If you have tried eye creams and under-eye patches, and have not seen any results, it is because you are not treating the cause. Topical solutions alone do not tend to work, but when paired with an eye bag removal treatment they work in harmony to refresh your under-eye area.

If your concern is excess eyelid skin, you might think going to an eyelid surgeon for eyelid surgery or eye bag surgery is the answer. But, at Doctors Tatiana + Rishi Advanced Aesthetics we also offer sagging eyelids treatment

Start by reviewing our eye bag removal treatments below, or get in touch with us to book your initial consultation. Most of our treatments come with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime.

Dermal fillers

What: Dermal fillers or tear trough fillers for the under eyes are an injectable treatment. They use a gel-like substance that contains hyaluronic acid to plump and add volume to the skin. Hyaluronic acid also hydrates the skin to make it more bright and healthy.

Benefits: They can add volume to sunken under eyes and help to hydrate under eyes to reduce dark circles. The results last 9-12 months and over this time they can also promote collagen production, which leads to stronger skin in that area.

Polynucleotides

What: Polynucleotides are a newer injectable treatment that uses DNA fragments to help bio-stimulate positive changes in the skin. This encourages cell renewal and the production of collagen and elastin in the skin.

Benefits: Because they help to promote collagen and elastin production, they not only help to tighten the skin under the eyes, but they can also plump and lift sagging skin. Polynucleotides also increase oxygen to the skin and improve blood circulation, which can reduce dark circles. The results of this treatment can last for years.

PLEXR

What: The PLEXR plasma pen uses plasma technology to tighten and remove excess skin for the upper and lower eyelids without surgery. Doctors Tatiana + Rishi are one of the first clinics in the UK to introduce this treatment to treat saggy eye bags.

Benefits: The heat generated from the plasma pen helps to vaporise loose skin. It also promotes collagen and elastin production which tightens the skin. The results of this treatment are long-lasting, but you will need at least seven days of downtime to heal.

Morpheus8

What: This treatment uses microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to firm and even out skin texture. Morpheus8 uses tiny needles which penetrate the skin and the tips of the needles heat up to deliver RF energy into the skin.

Benefits: This treatment is also known as collagen induction therapy as it helps to produce new collagen in the skin. This continues for months after your final treatment. This results in skin tightening and skin smoothing in the under-eye area. We can also use this treatment alongside others such as dermal fillers.

Secret Duo

What: The Secret duo treatment pairs RF microneedling with an erbium glass laser. You get all the benefits of microneedling, but the addition of laser energy helps to heat the skin and target the visible signs of ageing.

Benefits: It works on multiple skin concerns and all skin types. It helps to firm under eye skin, while also hydrating it. The laser energy also gives a glass-like glow to your skin that you can see immediately after your treatment.
